Science Sunday Conservation Lecture
Please join us for a conservation lecture on Sunday, October 1 at 1:00 pm in the Osher Great Hall of the Lurie Education Center. Andrew Johnson, Sea Otter Research and Conservation Manager at Monterey Bay Aquarium, is presenting Southern Sea Otter Reintroduction: Remaking History! The lecture is free to visitors and recommended for ages 12 and older.
Have you wondered how sea otters are doing these days? Come learn the current status of the southern sea otter population and about the barriers that still remain to full recovery of the species throughout California. Dr. Johnson will discuss Monterey Bay Aquarium’s work to reestablish sea otters in Elkhorn Slough, an estuary extending inland from Moss Landing, leading to some positive effects on that ecosystem. Now the question is: should we use sea otters to restore nearshore habitat in San Francisco Bay and areas farther north, where sea otters have not roamed for well over a century?
