Earthwatch Staff Development Program

Since 1991, thanks to the enthusiastic and financial support of Zoo Board Member Merrill Magowan, San Francisco Zoo employees have had the opportunity to participate in Earthwatch expeditions around the globe - making a difference by working with leading environmental researchers on critical issues such as biodiversity, sustainability, habitat loss, climate change, indigenous cultures and coral reef health.

A selection committee of curators, Mr. Magowan and other individuals provide the annual review of applicants. Criteria for selection include overall interest in the specific research program, past performance as a Zoo employee and potential benefit to the individual and the institution. Selected staff receive a complete stipend to participate and their time is covered by the Zoo as paid education leave.

Since 2000, further financial support from Rupert Johnson, Emeritus Zoological Society Board member, has created additional opportunities for staff to experience in-situ wildlife research. In addition, San Francisco Zoological Society Board Member Dr. Gloria Hing provided an extra trip during 2008 for a Zoo Employee and Zoo Youth Volunteer to go to Madagascar. The following figures summarize the number of staff sent to diverse areas of the world on their Earthwatch expeditions as of 2008:

14 - Africa
7   - Madagascar
6   - Central-South America
3   - North America
3   - Asia
3   - Australia
