On August 31st our young Magellanic Penguin chicks marched to Penguin Island. The San Francisco Zoo is currently home to 54 Magellanic Penguins, which makes our colony the largest in North America! With 173 chicks born at the zoo since 1984, our colony also happens to be the most prolific. This episode is 3 minutes and 33 seconds long, totaling 13.7mb.

We had a great breeding season this year with seven chicks hatched! These chicks stay with their parents until about five weeks of age, when they are then taken to our Avian Conservation Center for fish school where they learn to swim and eat. In the wild, Magellanic penguin parents abandon their chicks at this fledgling stage. This episode of Behind-the-Scenes plunges into the Zoo's fish school, enjoy!      Two Giraffe Calves Born at the Zoo!

The Zoo is thrilled to welcome not one, but two giraffe calves into the world. The first of these delightful and plucky animals was born on May 9 and the second was born on May 18. They are the first giraffes to be born in the Zoo's African Savanna, which will be their home.
