Adopt-a-Bald Eagle

The bald eagle was chosen as the national bird of the United States in 1792. Bald eagles are found only in North America, and are one of the seven species of sea eagles.

Adopt-an-Animal: Bald Eagle

The bald eagle is a large bird of prey with a wingspan measuring about six feet. Its average weight, however, is only about nine pounds – two pounds less than the average house cat. Adult birds are either solitary or found in pairs, as they may mate for life. These eagles continue to add on to their nests each year; the largest nest ever found was a whopping 9.5 feet wide and 20 feet high and weighted over two tons. Bald eagles were considered endangered in the 1970s, but thanks to widespread recovery efforts they were removed from the Endangered Species List in 2007. The San Francisco Zoo and Gardens is proud to have had a strong influence on the repopulation efforts of the bald eagle in California and Tennessee. In conjunction with the Wildlife Institute, the Zoo initiated its California Bald Eagle Breeding Program in 1985, and over 20 years raised and released over 95 eagles back into the wild.

Your Adopt-an-Animal donation will be used to support these iconic birds and further the San Francisco Zoological Society’s mission to connect people to wildlife, inspire caring for nature, and advance conservation action. An adoption of a bald eagle makes a great gift for friends, coworkers, family or for yourself!
