Insect Zoo Volunteers
Volunteer at one of the oldest insectariums in the country, the San Francisco Insect Zoo has been in continuous operation since 1979.
A little about the Insect Zoo
The exhibit area contains preserved specimens, a hands-on microscope, an observation beehive, a reading area for young children, a science booth for presentations, and more than thirty displays of live insects, arachnids, and other arthropods.
As a volunteer…
Not only will you learn about the animals in our collection, but you will also care for and teach visitors about the SF Zoo’s insects. The tasks of volunteers include preparing diets, assisting with designing habitats, giving public presentations, and helping with the cleaning and maintenance of the Insect Zoo.
Requirements, commitment, skills, and daily husbandry tasks
- Must be 18 years of age and over
- Must participate in an interview
- Must complete a background check ($50)

- Minimum commitment of two (2) days per month for six (6) months
- Available Shifts consist of four (4) hours during the following times:
- 9am – 1pm
- 1pm – 5pm
- 9am – 4pm
- Comfortable working with invertebrates
- A desire to learn about the biology and natural history of animals

- A desire to fulfill the mission of the San Francisco Zoo & Gardens, which is to connect all people with wildlife, inspire caring for nature, and advance conservation action.
