Zoo Camp FAQ

Have questions about Zoo Camp? Here are answers to some common Zoo Camp questions.

What grade do I sign my child up for?

For summer Zoo Camp, you must sign your child up according to the grade level they will be entering in the next school year. 

For winter Zoo Camp sessions, please register your child according to their grade in the current school year. 

How many weeks can I sign up for?

Campers entering Pre-K - 5th grade can be registered for 1 session of each course (A,B,C) for a total of 3 weeks. You may register your child for 1 session of the 2-week Conservation Camp program. 8th -12th grade campers can be registered for 1 session of Wellness 101 Camp.

What will the campers do all day?

Zoo Camp is filled with activities. There will be guided zoo tours, crafts, games, special activities and occasional behind-the-scenes experiences. Campers will spend the majority of their time out in the Zoo.

What is the camper to adult ratio?

There are approximately 20 children in each camp group, with 2 adult instructors and 1-2 high school volunteers. The maximum enrollment for the Pre-K / K class is 15 children.

Are the children supervised at all times?

Yes, children are never left unsupervised on Zoo grounds. Our staff are all background checked, have had a week of extensive training and are CPR and First Aid trained.

Can my 5 year old and 10 year old attend the same class?

No. For the benefit of the classes and the campers we follow strict guidelines on age ranges and grade levels.

Can we sign up with a friend?

Yes, when you register you will see a space available to write in a friend’s name. We will do our best to accommodate requests, but cannot make guarantees.

Can you tell me if my child’s friend has already signed up for Zoo Camp?

No, privacy laws do not allow us to share enrollment information.

How much does it cost?

The fees are listed on the Zoo Camp webpage.

Can I become a member when I sign-up for camp?

You need to become a member before registering for camp. We are unable to retroactively apply the membership discounts, so please make sure that you know your member number before registering. Learn more about San Francisco Zoo memberships here

Do you have scholarships available?

Yes, we offer a lottery for full and partial scholarships for Summer Zoo Camp only. We will be accepting scholarship applications from February 1st, 2020 to April 1st, 2020. Email zoocamp@sfzoo.org to request a scholarship application.

Can my Pre-K / K camper stay for the entire day?

No. Due to space and staffing limitations we are only able to accommodate a half-day option for Pre-K/ K campers. 

How much interaction will the campers have with animals?

Each week the camp class will experience a close encounter with an animal from our Animal Resource Center. There may be other occasions in which they will be able to see an animal up-close or have a unique opportunity to connect with an animal keeper. They will not be allowed to hold an animal, but will have the chance to touch one.

What will my child do in extended care and who can take advantage of this service?

Extended care is a supervised playtime designed to accommodate adults of campers that need additional time to get to and from work and other commitments. Activities, although limited, are designed to suit all ages of children and will take place in the Education Center. 

Registration is per week only; we cannot accommodate drop-ins. 

Both early drop-off and late pick-up services are available for grades 1st grade and up. AM Pre-K/K campers may be registered for early drop-off only. PM Pre-K/K campers may be registered for late pick-up only.

Do I have to pay for parking at drop-off and pick-up?

No, we provide daily complimentary parking passes to Zoo Camp families who park vehicles in our parking lot. 

Can I switch weeks after registering?

Yes, as long as there is availability in the week that you want to switch to. A $20 administrative fee applies each time you switch weeks after registering.

What is the cancellation policy?

Cancellations must be received in writing by email or fax.

A 75% refund will be issued for cancellations received more than 7 days in advance of the event. The non-refundable 25% will be forfeited completely and is non-transferable.

No refunds will be issued within 7 days of the event. No refunds or transfers will be issued for missed days. In the unlikely event the Zoo has to cancel, you will be issued a full refund.

If a child is registered for more than 1 session of each course (A,B,C, Conservation Camp, or Wellness 101), the Zoo reserves the right to cancel additional courses at any time without advance notice.

Extended care registration is per week only; there are no prorated options.

Cancellation policy also applies to scholarship recipients and extended care.
