Adopt-a-Frog

While not on display to the public at the San Francisco Zoo and Gardens, these frogs are raised in our Conservation and Wellness Center before being released to the wild, and your adoption helps us to keep this endangered species alive in its native habitat!

Adopt-an-Animal: Mountain Yellow-legged Frog

Unique Conservation Spotlight Adoption!

The California mountain yellow-legged frog has suffered a rapid and severe population decline due to an emerging, highly infectious fungal disease of the skin called chytridiomycosis (chytrid). The San Francisco Zoo and its partners are working together to keep these amazing frogs in their high mountain habitat by collecting early-stage froglets and tadpoles and rearing them in captivity. Juveniles that are vulnerable in the wild develop in the safety of the Zoo’s lab, where they are inoculated against the disease, mature in just six months, and can then be reintroduced back into their native habitats in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks.

Your Adopt-an-Animal donation will be used to support these amazing amphibians and further the San Francisco Zoological Society’s mission to connect people to wildlife, inspire caring for nature and advance conservation action.
