Adopt-a-Flamingo
Flamingos belong to one of the oldest bird groups alive. There are six types of flamingo, including five separate species. And there are 19 vertebrae in a flamingo neck; humans have only seven.
The Adopt An Animal program is currently on hiatus as we refresh the program with new animal opportunities. The program will resume in early March.
Adopt-an-Animal: Chilean Flamingo
During certain times of the year here at the San Francisco Zoo you may spot a tiny Chilean flamingo chick peering out from beneath the wing of a parent. In 2000, after years of unsuccessful breeding attempts, the nesting site was moved to the front of the exhibit and covered with special nesting mud, and the Chilean flamingos have bred successfully multiple times since.
Your Adopt-an-Animal donation will be used to support these beautiful birds and further the San Francisco Zoological Society’s mission to connect people to wildlife, inspire caring for nature and advance conservation action. Adopting a Chilean flamingo makes a great gift for friends, coworkers, family or for yourself!
