Adopt-a-Macaw

These birds are able to eat some poisonous fruits due to their habit of eating river clay, which appears to neutralize the toxins.

Adopt-an-Animal: Green-winged Macaw

Green-winged macaws are one of the largest macaw species, second only to the hyacinth macaw. They have a very powerful beak which can generate a pressure of 2000 psi and can snap a broomstick in half. Their feet have two toes in front and two behind; this allows them to balance on tree branches better. Green-winged macaws are frequently seen in pairs or family groups and occasionally gather in small flocks of up to twelve birds. Their lifespan is 35-40 years in the wild, and 60-80 years in captivity.

Your Adopt-an-Animal donation will be used to support these colorful creatures and further the San Francisco Zoological Society’s mission to connect people to wildlife, inspire caring for nature, and advance conservation action. An adoption of a green-winged macaw makes a great gift for friends, coworkers, family or for yourself!
