Adopt-a-Giraffe

Reticulated giraffes form loosely organized groups of two to 20 animals. Apparently giraffes have “friends,” and will associate with certain individuals in the group more often than others.

Adopt-an-Animal: Reticulated Giraffe

What can be 18 feet tall, weigh up to 3,000 pounds and has eyelashes to die for? A giraffe! These amazing creatures are browsers, eating the leaves of acacia, mimosa and wild apricot trees. In zoos, they are fed acacia, alfalfa, veggies and giraffe chow. Reticulated giraffes are listed as endangered — West Africa used to have large populations, and now their range has shrunk to in and around Tanzania. As with many large mammals, habitat destruction is their biggest threat.

Your gift will be used to support these gentle giants and further the San Francisco Zoological Society’s mission to connect people to wildlife, inspire caring for nature and advance conservation action. An adoption of a giraffe makes a great gift for friends, coworkers, family or for yourself!
